WARREN — The Trumbull County MetroParks board is reviewing its options after the defeat of a 0.6-mill additional levy on the November ballot.
The board met recently to discuss the need to get a levy back on the ballot but members are not sure if it will be in 2021 or 2022.
Zachary Svette, executive director of the metroparks, said he will check to see what costs will be involved to place the levy on the ballot in 2021 or 2022 noting it is more expensive to place a levy on the ballot in an odd-numbered year.
The levy was defeated 50.9 percent to 49.1 percent. The levy would have generated $2 million per year to maintain the parks and pay for new projects.
Board President Nicolette Darkangelo said some park projects will need to be prioritized and others postponed. She said efforts will be made to get grants for projects and work collaboratively with other groups.
“We lost by a half a point. The levy is going to have to be put on the ballot again. We have to be more visible and get the parks more visible and working together in more collaborations and be on committees with the Creating Healthy Communities Partnership and other groups and organizations,” Darkangelo said.
She said the best time to get the levy on will be spring 2022.
