WARREN — Gunshot wounds, not fire, killed a man and woman whose bodies were recovered from a burning home late Friday.
Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk said it was clear that the man, identified as homeowner Charles McNear, 53, and a woman in the house, presumed to be McNear’s girlfriend, Sophie Stefek, 41, died before the fire was started because neither had any carbon monoxide in their lungs, which is evidence that the fire didn’t cause their deaths.
Germaniuk, who completed autopsies on the bodies, did not specify how many times each person had been shot. Although investigators have enough “presumptive information” leading them to believe the woman is Stefek, they are waiting for DNA results to positively identify her body, Germaniuk explained. The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is testing the DNA samples collected from the woman’s body and Stefek’s family members.
