WHTX-AM 1570 unveiled a new format this week and is planning an increased local sports presence.

Tim Phillips, co-general manager and director of programming, said the music programming will be a mix of adult contemporary and standards drawing from a broad range of artists, including Simon & Garfunkel, America, Smokey Robinson, Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, Tony Bennett, Brenda Lee and Diana Ross and the Supremes.

“It’s music that is comfortable for people, that brings back positive memories for people,” Phillips said.

Longtime Mahoning Valley radio personality Gary Rhamy is doing mornings, Phillips said, and Alan K. Courtright is expected to be on air next week. Other local radio veterans could be added to the station in the coming weeks.

WHTX will broadcast high school football, basketball and other sports during the school year, and local radio sports personality Bob Church will host “Church’s Chat on Sports” at 10 a.m. Saturdays with an emphasis on local prep and college sports.

“Bob is such a fixture when it comes to the local sports scene,” Phillips said. “They instantly recognize his voice.”

The station also will carry Notre Dame football games in the fall and will be the local voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014, Phillips said, and the station may be able to start carrying games for the remainder of the current season.

“With the year the Pirates are having and the season Notre Dame had last year, I’m excited,” Church said.
