Ohio posts second-most weekly cases since mid-January

The number of COVID-19 cases reported this past week in Ohio was the second most for a week in eight months. The state had 48,165 cases for the week ending Saturday. Only the week prior with 53,344 COVID-19 cases had more since the week ending Jan. 16, which had 50,530. Also, last week’s 317 COVID-19 deaths is the most for a week since March 14 to 20, which had 469. Case rates skyrocket in Ohio

The state continues an alarming trend of very high COVID-19 cases — seeing the number increase by more than 25 times what it was about two months ago. The state was at 683.3 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents for the period between Sept. 2 and Wednesday, according to statistics provided Friday by the Ohio Department of Health. One new death reported at Trumbull, Mahoning facilities

One additional death was reported this week at a Mahoning County long-term care facility, and one was reported at a Trumbull County facility. It brings the two-week total to five after going about six weeks without any deaths attributed to the virus. The new totals are 79 for Columbiana County, 160 for Trumbull and 284 for Mahoning. September on pace for 3rd-most monthly cases

Through its first 15 days, September is on pace to have the third-most COVID-19 cases ever for a month in Ohio. As of Wednesday, the state had 98,365 cases reported for the first half of September. That is an average of almost 6,558 per day. At that pace, Ohio would end September with nearly 196,730 COVID-19 cases.
