TOWN HALL SET: The Mahoning Valley People's Action Alliance is hosting a town hall with the topic "The Needs of Working Class Americans" at 2 p.m. Friday at the Local UAW 1112 Union Hall, 11471 Reuther Drive, Lordstown. One of the items that will be discussed is Social Security and affordability for seniors. The anniversary of the founding of the Social Security Administration is Aug. 14. The event is free and doors will open at 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by Alliance for Retired Americans, SOAR, Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans Education Fund and the Mahoning Valley People's Action Alliance.
NATURE CENTER: Mosquito Lake State Park in Bazetta will have a nature center complex ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. Friday at the park, 3620 Hoagland Blackstub Road. The nature center is located in the heart of the park campground entrance. The event is being cohosted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Watercraft and Friends of Mosquito Lake State Park.
BEACH BASH: Mosquito Lake State Park will have a Beach Bash on Saturday with a community night at the parking lot and the park by the beach. There will be a car show, food trucks, music and more.
SUMMERFEST: Brookfield Local Schools and Brookfield Township will host the third annual Warrior Nation Summerfest and car show -- a free family-friendly event celebrating the community with activities for all ages. The event will be noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the school district upper parking lot and high school football stadium, 14 Bedford Road SE. The event will include a car show, craft show, vendor fair, community booths, music and kids zone. New this year is a Meet the Warriors-Punt, Pass and Kick contest from 1 to 3 p.m. where the public can meet student athletes. Proceeds from the event will be to purchase an additional speed tracking sign to be installed in front of the schools to help promote traffic safety throughout the school zone.
5K FUN RUN/WALK: Braceville Community Foundation will have a 5K Fun Run/Walk Race 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Braceville Robinson Road will be closed between state Routes 5 and 82.
HEALTHY HEARTS AND PAWS: Healthy Hearts and Paws Project will have a fundraiser 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Niles Sons of Italy, 25 E. Park Ave., Niles. The event will include music, basket raffles and events to celebrate bartenders.
INDIE AUTHOR AND ARTIST MARKET: The Book Nook, 161 High St. NW, Warren, will host an indie author and artist's market at 10 a.m. Sunday. The event will have indie authors, crafters, makers, artists and food vendors. For more information, call 330-442-0012.
AVIATION CAREERS OPEN HOUSE: The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics Youngstown campus at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna will host an open house at 11 a.m. Saturday for a public aviation exploration event, connecting prospective students directly with employers. One of the industry's most critical workforce gaps is mechanics and technicians responsible for keeping aircraft safe, inspected and operational, PIA officials said.
VETERANS LUNCH AND LEARN: Dr. Chrisanne Gordon, founder and executive director of the Resurrecting Lives Foundation, will be the speaker for the next Veterans Lunch and Learn 11:30 a.m to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at Freedom Church, 3999 McCarty Drive, Canfield. Gordon is a board-certified rehabilitation physician, author, filmmaker, and nationally recognized advocate for veterans living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the invisible wounds of war.
Resurrecting Lives Foundation (RLF) is a national nonprofit organization focused on raising awareness of the consequences of untreated brain injuries while advocating for services preventing suicides among veterans, allowing a path to a future for those veterans struggling with the signature wounds of the Global War on Terror -- TBI and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The lunch is free, but registration is required at www.befreemc.org/vet.
ALZHEIMER SUPPORT: Alzheimer Network support group will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at Guiding Light Presbyterian Church, 890 Churchill Hubbard Road, Girard. Due to winter weather, dangerous road conditions and a recently announced flu variant, the group is initiating a "call-in reservation policy" for those who wish to attend one of the regularly announced support groups. The alternative method to reach the Alzheimer Network is to call 330-788-9755 anytime to speak about concerns.
