Vigil set to remember Warren woman, children

VIGIL PLANNED: The Community Outreach Collaboration and #J43JT will present a Justice Tree of Life dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday at the community garden at the corner of Highland Avenue and Oak Street SW in Warren. The event will remember Jameila West, 27, who was a Warren native, and her three children who were killed in Columbus in 2006.

TAILS ON THE TOWN: The second annual Tails on the Town event for people and their canine companions will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on Canal and Broad streets in downtown Newton Falls. The event will include various vendors, music, basket raffle, games, displays and dog-friendly events including a cake walk for dogs. Proceeds will help organizations that benefit dogs, such as Legacy Dog Rescue. The event was moved from Saturday to Sunday due to the expected rain on Saturday.

FISHING DERBY: The Eagle Creek Conservation Club will host its annual fishing derby for children from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the pond at Newton Falls Park. Registration begins at 11 a.m.

UPTON HOUSE: The Harriet Taylor Upton House on Mahoning Avenue in Warren will have a monthly open house from 2 to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of each month on June 7, July 5 and August 2. There will be tours of the historic home.

WRITING WORKSHOP: Lit Youngstown is offering a writing workshop for individuals facing serious illness in themselves or family members. Seating is limited and registration is required. To register, visit lityoungstown.org.

The Shape of the Wind Workshop with Jeanne Bryner will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays until July 15, at the McKinley Birthplace Home, Niles.

READING CHALLENGE: Celebrate America’s 250th birthday by helping the McKinley Memorial Library reach its goal of reading 250 books this Saturday through Aug. 1. Participants who visit the library and tell staff what books they’ve read may enter for the chance to win a $25 Dairy Queen gift card.

SUMMER READING: McKinley Memorial Library will present “Summer Reading: Unearth a Story” on Saturday and Aug. 1.

IMMUNIZATION CLINIC: The Warren City Health District will provide a public children’s immunization clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the health district office, 258 E. Market St., Warren. No appointment needed. Bring updated shot records.

STORYTIMES: McKinley Memorial Library, Niles, presents June Storytimes at 11 a.m. Mondays during June in the library’s children’s room.

Caregivers and their children through age 4 are invited to attend to encourage reading with fun stories, songs and crafts. Each week will feature a different theme.

LEGO CLUB: McKinley Memorial Library, Niles, will host the Lego Club, for ages 5 to 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays in June in the library’s children’s room. Builders of all skill levels are invited. All supplies will be provided.
