Help clean up Mahoning River

The seeing eye

VOLUNTEER: Help protect and restore local waterway at the next Friends of the Mahoning River cleanup, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, weather permitting. Meet at Thomas Swift Park, Warren, at 9:45 a.m. Cars will shuttle to the takeout at Canoe City in Leavittsburg.

This is primarily an on-water cleanup, but there is work to do on shore if you do not have a boat. Wear closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as well as sunscreen and a hat. Bring your own water bottle.

LAKE TO PLATE: Mosquito Lake State Park in Bazetta will offer Lake to Plate 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Mosquito Lake Marina, 1439 Wilson Sharpsville Road, Bazetta. The Division of Wildlife is teaming up with Mosquito Lake for a three-part program on learning to fish, cleaning the fish with instruction from local fishermen and providing recipes to prepare the fish to eat.

SENIOR WATCH: The Liberty Senior Watch program invites residents age 60 and older to learn more about available complimentary services. The watch supports wellness checks, daily phone calls and home safety enhancements, including emergency entry lockboxes and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. BIKE SHOW: Fairhaven Industries will have a car and bike show 1 to 4 p,m. Saturday at 420 Lincoln Way, Niles. There will be trophies, live music, food concessions and vendors. Entry per vehicle is $10.

BIKE SAFETY EVENT: Bike SMART, ride safe and have fun! Stop by the Warren Library, 444 Mahoning Ave NW, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for a free bicycle safety and awareness event. In addition to a bike maintenance station, many community organizations will be sharing helpful resources, giveaways and fun activities to encourage bike safety. LIBRARY PROGRAMS: The McKinley Memorial Library will offer Cookbook Club 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the McKinley Birthplace Home. Cookbook fans are invited to discuss a new cookbook or theme each month. This month’s selections are “Skinnytaste High Protein” by Gina Homolka with Heather K. Jones, R.D., and/or “The Powered by Protein Cookbook” by Jackie Hartlaub.

Also, visit with author Marcy Campbell at 10 a.m. Saturday at StoryWalk in Stevens Park off Crandon Avenue. During this special storytime, participants will join award-winning author Marcy Campbell on a walk through her picture book, “What Are You Waiting For?” The storywalk is located on the pathway to the right of the playground and pickleball and tennis courts.

SQUARE DANCE: The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance 7:30 t0 10 p.m. Saturday at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St. Rebecca Shull Smith will be the caller. The theme will be strawberry night. This will be a high / low dance with alternating tips for recently graduated dancers and tips for more experienced dancers. SHELTER PET YOGA: The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County is offering shelter pet yoga Saturday, with Liz Hoffman of The Village Yoga Community for ages 8 and up.

Cost is $10 to participate. Bring your own mat. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.; yoga starts at noon.

OPEN HOUSE: TNR of Warren, 2428 Elm Road, Warren, is inviting community members to attend a volunteer open house 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday to learn more about the organization’s work and discover ways to get involved. No experience is necessary, and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

TNR of Warren works throughout the community to improve the lives of cats and the people who care for them through low-cost spay and neuter clinics, discounted medications, a pet food assistance program, shelter projects and community outreach. Volunteers are needed in many areas, including clinic support, fundraising events, administrative assistance, registration days, shelter building and community outreach.

RAFFLE FUNDRAISER: The Johnston Activity Committee’s second annual Ice Cream / Basket Raffle / Bake Sale Fundraiser will be noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Johnston Fire Station, 4424 Greenville Road NE, Farmdale.

Ticket prices for both the basket raffle and 50 / 50 are one for $1, six for $5, 15 for $10 and 40 for $20. Winners will be drawn at 5 p.m. and will be notified Sunday evening or Monday morning.
