Scholarship roast set
APRI SCHOLARSHIP ROAST: The 18th annual A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) annual scholarship roast will take place 3 p.m. Saturday at DiVieste’s Banquet Center. The event will honor Sterling McCullough Williams, who lives in Warren and owns and operates Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Homes in Youngstown and Warren. PASTOR’S 13TH YEAR: Friendship Baptist Church, 1954 Brier St. SE, Warren, will present the 13th pastoral anniversary worship celebration 10:30 a.m. Sunday for the Rev. A.M. Odom. Guest speaker is the Rev. Russell Penn Jr., pastor of Second Missionary Baptist Church in Farrell, Pa. The church also will host vacation Bible school 5 to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday for all ages, including adults. The theme is “Hooked! Reeled in to Serve God?”
BOOK SALE: Friends of the Brookfield Library will have a book sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday during the Grove Street Block Party at the library, 7032 Grove St. Books for children and adults, CDs, DVDs and more are 25 cents each. The free, family-friendly block party includes touch-a-truck and children’s activities, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a magic show at 11 a.m.; strolling balloon art, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; and a musical performance at 2 p.m.
INTERFAITH PRAYER VIGIL: An interfaith prayer vigil will take place 1 p.m. Saturday at 2240 Hubbard Road, Youngstown. The event will be held in the gravel lot north of the entrance. Take a chair, if needed. People of faith, interfaith clergy and allies will gather in prayer, song and reflection outside the Core Civic ICE prison to demand that all its detained immigrants and asylum seekers receive their due process rights, including the right to have legal and spirited counsel while detained. The vigil is being organized by the Youngstown Area Interfaith Prayer Group, the Interfaith Group Against Hate in Cleveland and the We Are the Many, We are the One coalition as an expression of their continued advocacy of the rights of immigrants.
CRIBS FOR KIDS: The Warren City Health District, 258 E. Market St., will be providing a public Cribs for Kids Class at 2 p.m. Monday. Call 330-841-2596 to register to receive a free Pack-N-Play.
FOOD SOVEREIGNTY INITIATIVE: The Healthy Community Partnership’s Healthy Food Action Team is excited to launch their second year of Plant Power! A Food Sovereignty Initiative. This initiative will help community members grow their own fresh foods through free plant and seed giveaways and education on growing at home.
From late May to early July, members of the Healthy Food Action Team will distribute free plants at community events in Youngstown and Warren. Plants being given away will be purchased from locally owned and operated greenhouses.
Community members can pick up plants 9 a.m to noon Saturday at Pride & Joy Today Foundation Car Show, 525 Austin Ave. SW, Warren, while supplies last.
BUG RUN: Santa’s Bad Elves Bug Run will be 4 to 7 p.m. June 6 at The Local Tap & Grill, 2242 Greenville Road, Cortland. All vehicles are welcome and registration is $10 per person. Bikes leave anytime after registration and the last bike in is 9 p.m.
Proceeds will go to raise money to support the 20th annual Santa Run on Aug. 15.
