Memorial Day events in the Mahoning Valley

SUNDAY

• CORTLAND — The Cortland Veterans Memorial Committee program will be at 2 p..m. at the Veterans Memorial in Point Park. In line with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, the Cortland Community Band will perform at 1:30 p.m. The featured speaker will be Lt. Col. James Johnson (U.S. Army retired). In case of rain, the program will be moved to Cortland Christian Church, 153 Grove Drive.

MONDAY

• BEAVER TOWNSHIP — There will be a 11 a.m. ceremony at the veterans memorial, corner of Routes 164 and 165.

• BOARDMAN — Groups participating in the parade will assemble at Boardman Center Intermediate School, 7410 Market St. at 9 a.m., and the parade begins at 10 a.m. The parade proceeds north on Market Street to the U.S. Route 224 intersection, then proceeds east on Route 224 to Boardman Township Park, where an 11 a.m. service will be conducted at the Maag Outdoor Amphitheater. The keynote speaker is Jerre Patterson, a Boardman native and Marine Corps and Vietnam War veteran. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be at 11 a.m. in the Boardman Park Community Center.

• BRACEVILLE — There will be an 11 a.m. service at the township hall on Newton Falls Braceville Road.

• GIRARD — There will be an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Girard City Cemetery with Girard High School students reading the Gettysburg Address and the names of Girard veterans. The Civil Air Patrol cadets will raise the flag and the national anthem will be played by the Girard High School Band, which also will play the Armed Forces Medley. There also will be a placing of the wreath.

• HOWLAND — Howland American Legion Post 700 will host a service at 10 a.m. at the Howland Township Cemetery.

• LEAVITTSBURG — 10 a.m. parade in downtown Leavittsburg with a service following at memorial in former LaBrae High School parking lot off West Market Street hosted by American Legion Post 699.

• LOWELLVILLE — Christ the Good Shepherd Parish will host an 11 a.m. Mass in the cemetery chapel at 3900 Villa Marie Road for anyone who has family or friends buried in the cemetery.

• LORDSTOWN — There will be a service at 10 a.m. at the cemetery off Salt Springs Road.

• McDONALD — A service will take place at 1 p.m. at the War Memorial marker at Woodland Park.

• NORTH JACKSON — A ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in North Jackson Cemetery. Keynote speaker is Army Sgt. and Jackson-Milton graduate Ryan Seka. For more information, email Jack Acri, pastor@firstfederatedchurch.net.

• SOUTHINGTON — There will be an 11 a.m. service at the township center, with the guest speaker being Andy Weaver, a 90-year-old Korean War veteran from West Farmington, who is the last survivor among five brothers who served in Korea.

• STRUTHERS — A ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. at the Beirut Memorial, followed at 9 a.m. at the community kayak launch for those lost at sea, 10 a.m. program at the high school and 11 a.m. at Lake Park Cemetery.

• VERNON — 10 a.m.service at township hall conducted by the Kinsman American Legion, followed by a gathering at Westview Cemetery

• VIENNA — There will be a 12:30 p.m. service at the Vienna Sailors and Soldiers Memorial at the township center.

• WARREN — 11 a.m. program at the Warren Community Amphitheatre, where veterans will be honored, including two local Navy veterans — Mike Salcone, 102, and Jeffrey Littell, 104, who both served in the 1940s. The parade after the service will start on Mahoning Avenue at Perkins Park and travel around Courthouse Square. There will be a service after the parade at Oakwood Cemetery.

• WEATHERSFIELD — There will be a 9 a.m. service at the community park on state Route 46.
