Seeing Eye: Press Club to host observation

WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: The sixth annual World Press Freedom Day will be observed at noon Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown, when Youngstown Press Club members will read the names of 129 journalists killed last year while practicing their profession. The event is free to the public. The number of journalists killed in 2025 was the most registered since data on journalists’ deaths has been taking place since 1992. The previous record was in 2024 at 103 journalists. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press.

DERBY TEA: The National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Museum and the Warren Heritage Center will cohost a Derby Day Tea party noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Kinsman House in Warren. Tickets are $25. To RSVP, called Belinda at 330-652-4273.

MONTHLY MEETING: St. Joseph Warren Hospital Retirees will have their monthly meeting 9:30 a.m. today at Wayside Restaurant in Champion. Retired and former employees from St. Joseph or Warren General Hospital are welcome to attend. Attendees are requested to bring nonperishable items for food bank donation.

EMPTY MEDICINE COLLECTION: Operation Empty Medicine Cabinet, which is a prescription drug disposal program to protect the community, will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, 5138 Enterprise Drive, Warren. Expired, unwanted and unused prescription medication can be brought for safe disposal For information, call 330-675-2765 ext.119.

ALUMNI TO MEET: The Hartford Badger Alumni Association will host its 139th annual banquet at 6 p.m. May 9 at the Masonic Temple, 3327 state Route 7. Hartford. The Class of 1976 will be honored at the event Cost is $18 per person. Registration is at 5 p.m. RSVP by Friday at 330-240-2724.

SPRING CLEANUP: Newton Township will host an annual spring cleanup and tire collection 8 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Items can be brought to the township administration building, 4410 Newton Falls Bailey Road. There is a limit of eight passenger tires and they must be off the rim.
