Niles to celebrate luck of the Irish

LUCK OF THE IRISH: The annual St. Stephen Luck of the Irish Celebration is set March 14 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre, 123 N. Main St., Niles, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with one winner going home with a grand prize of $3,000. The St. Stephen Luck of the Irish Celebration, named to honor the early Irish settlers who founded St. Stephen Church in 1853, is an annual community-wide event that includes a reverse raffle with more than $6,000 in cash prizes, live music from DJ Jeff Burke, silent and basket auction items, and numerous games and prizes to be won. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $65, which includes entry into the reverse raffle, appetizers, buffet dinner, dessert, beer, wine and Irish coffee bar. Tickets for the raffle only are $40. Tickets may be purchased after weekend Masses or by contacting the St. Pope John XXIII rectory at 330-652-5825, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Advance tickets are required. No tickets will be sold at the door on the day of the event.

OREO TASTE TEST: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will offer an Oreo Taste Test Challenge at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles. National Oreo Day is Friday. The event is for ages 12 and older who can sample different Oreo cookie flavors and select their favorites. Registration is needed at 330-652-1704 ext 3.

LIBRARY PROGRAM: The Girard Free Library will host the Cozy Crafters at 6 p.m. today. Those who attend can knit, crochet and embroider and will be able to share tips with one another as they work on current projects.

SINGER TO PERFORM: Jenah Shank, a singer and songwriter will share her original songs during a performance at 6 pm. Saturday at the Makers Market Cafe, 201 W. Main St., Cortland, admission is free. Shank’s musical style includes folk pop, alternative and contemporary Christian. She also gives her time and talents to community service,

AMISH PROGRAM: The Harriet Taylor Upton Association, 380 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren, will begin their America250 First Wednesday series at 10 a.m. Wednesday with a presentation by Chester Kurtz, who will discuss the history of the Amish church. Kurtz served on the board of the Geauga Amish Historical Museum in Middlefield The Geauga-Trumbull Amish community is the fourth largest in the United States. Refreshments will be served 30 minutes before the program.

GUEST SPEAKER: Eric Garcia, Washington Bureau chief and senior Washington correspondent at the Independent and an autism advocate, will be the guest speaker at 6 p.m. March 19 at the Youngstown Press Club, which will meet at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Garcia will discuss myths about the autism spectrum disorder. The program moderator will be Sean Barron, a correspondent for The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Habitat for Humanity of the Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for its home ownership program, including a new project set to start in Warren followed by a house in Mahoning County. WALK WITH A DOC: Youngstown State University’s Bitonte College of Health and Human Services continues its commitment to public health through the Walk with a Doc program, a free community wellness initiative at the Southern Park Mall.

This month, the program takes place 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday and the topic is balance. The walk is led by YSU physical therapy faculty and students. Each session begins with a brief health talk before participants join in a walk around the mall. The events are designed to promote fitness, wellness and preventive care in a fun and social environment.

Walk with a Doc is part of an international nonprofit founded in 2005 to encourage healthier lifestyles through movement and conversation with medical professionals. The walks are free and open to the public. All ages and fitness levels are welcome, and no registration is required.

COIN CLUB TO MEET: The Wheatland Mercer County Coin Club will have a special monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Wheatland Community Center (formerly called the Wheatland Borough Building).

The address is 71 Broadway Ave. in the Wheatland neighborhood of Hermitage. This month is a potluck picnic and the club will provide the meat, buns and beverages. Members are requested to bring a side dish.

Monthly meetings include a special raffle, main raffle, coin auction, door prizes, birthday prizes and much more.

Every member will be awarded one free coin and may participate in the raffles. More information is available on the club’s website.

ALZHEIMER SUPPORT: Alzheimer Network support group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hermitage Municipal Building, 800 N. Hermitage Road. Due to winter weather, dangerous road conditions and a recently announced flu variant, the group is initiating a “call-in reservation policy” for those who wish to attend one of the regularly announced support groups.

A support group meeting will also be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center, 855 Howland Wilson Road.

The alternative method to reach the Alzheimer Network is to call 330-788-9755 anytime to speak about concerns.

LIBRARY PROGRAM: Children’s programming will resume this month at the Bristol Public Library. Story Time for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds, will be at 10 a.m. on Fridays. Sessions will begin on March 6 and will end on March 27. Children will enjoy stories, songs, and games during each session. Registration is required. WELLNESS ON WHEELS: The Warren City Health District’s Wellness on Wheels will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday onsite at Save-A-Lot Grocery, 1020 N. Park Ave., Warren.

FLU VACCINE CLINIC: The Warren City Health District will host a COVID-19 and flu vaccine clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Health District, 258 E. Market St., Warren. No appointment is needed.

CLEANUP AT CEMETERY: Tod Homestead Cemetery on Belmont Avenue in Youngstown, has set its annual cleanup on March 16. All decorations on graves, including solar lights and artificial flowers in cemetery vases, will be removed at this time. Anyone wanting to recover the decorations must do so before that date.

KIDS CLUB: McKinley Memorial Library will present Kids Club: Measuring, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles. Children ages 5 to 11 are invited on the first and third Thursday of every month to enjoy a fun activity related to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). This week, students will measure time, height and weight, and keep a record for comparison. Registration for this program is required at 330-652-1704, ext. 4.
