It seems like just yesterday we were taking down the Christmas tree and putting away all our holiday decor, and once again the holiday season is upon us!

As a farmer, not only do we have to take care of the normal holiday prep, but we also must plan for any upcoming holiday events and travel and how those will be covered at the farm. Although it takes extra planning, and sometimes even extra work (weather depending), the holiday season on the farm holds an extra special place in my heart.

As a dairy farmer, it is obvious that the cows need to be milked and fed, even if it is Christmas day. To some not in the industry, this might seem like a real chore to have to take care of the animals before any Christmas gifts or meals can happen, but to me it is such a special time.

Christmas morning in the barn is honestly one of my favorite days of the year. There is something unexplainably unique about spending Christmas morning surrounded by the cows and calves and listening to Christmas music. Although this might delay the start of the holiday festivities a bit, it is such an honor and privilege to be in the barn this morning. I am also very thankful to have an exceptional relief crew that can cover shifts at the dairy when celebrations and travel fall during chore time throughout the holiday season.

Another favorite part of this season for me is hearing everyone’s traditions and ways of celebrating. For our family, we do a big Italian Christmas Eve gathering followed by presents and Christmas Eve barn chores. On Christmas Day, celebrations continue with a light breakfast (after chores of course) and a large gathering for lunch and presents after. What are some unique ways that your family celebrates the holidays?

Another way that I enjoy celebrating the holidays and incorporating my love for dairy is through a large charcuterie board served on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day filled with a multitude of decadent and traditional cheeses and cheese spreads. Not only is this a great way to try new flavors and combinations, but it also supports the dairy industry and the products that farmers work hard to produce!

No matter how you celebrate the holiday season, I hope that your hearts and homes are filled with joy and happiness. Whether traveling or celebrating locally, may you have a healthy and safe time celebrating with those around you.

As always, remember to pause for a moment this year around the table and give thanks to the farmers who work tirelessly to provide you with a safe and plentiful supply of food so that we can continue to have the opportunity to celebrate with one another over a meal.
