Taking a tour of history, cemetery

The seeing eye

HISTORY WALK: A Living History Walk through Brownwood Cemetery, featuring a special focus on 11 Civil War veterans laid to rest there, will be at 2 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Brownwood Cemetery. The walk is 0.25 miles on a paved driveway. Guided interpreters in period costume will share the personal stories of local soldiers — their struggles, their battles, and the powerful account of one man’s imprisonment at the infamous Andersonville Prison. This is a Living History Walk, not a ghost walk. Experience history and reflect on the sacrifices of those who served. Donation is $10 for adults and $5 per student. Proceeds will go toward flowers for veterans’ graves this spring.

NEW SHOES OUTREACH: Lakeview Outreach and Fellowship is hosting the annual new shoes for children event. The ecumenical outreach works with local schools. Donations are needed by Saturday. Each pair of shoes costs $30. Make checks payable to Lakeview Outreach and Fellowship, P.O. Box 494, Cortland, OH 44410.

ROTARY GALA: The Rotary Club of Niles is celebrating its 100th year 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre, 123 N. Main Street, Niles. There will be a buffet style dinner, wine fountain, a program discussing our first 100 years, live music featuring John Reese and the Gatsby Guys, period dance routines performed by New Wave Dance Company, and a photo opportunity in front of our 1920s theme backdrop. We encourage 1920s period attire. Tickets are $50 / person or $90 / couple and are available through a link on our Facebook page (Rotary Club of Niles). Send a check made out to Niles Rotary Club to Belinda Weiss, 40 N. Main Street, P.O. Box 121, Niles, OH 44446. For questions, call Weiss at 330-652-4273.
