Seeing Eye: Goldstone-Mirkin Family Middle School first look on tap for today

FIRST LOOK: The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Akiva Academy will offer a "first look" of the new Altshuler Akiva Academy, Goldstone-Mirkin Family Middle School at the Suzi Solomon Campus in Youngstown.

The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Akiva Academy broke ground on a new middle school (5th-8th grades) earlier this year. The $1.5 million expansion includes four classrooms, office spaces and a multipurpose area designed for Shabbat services. In the next five years, this project will allow Akiva Academy to double its current enrollment.

Members of the public are invited to tour the new school 5 to 6 p.m. today at 520 Gypsy Lane, which is the old Allen's Pharmacy. Guests are asked to park in the lot between the Jewish Community Center and Heritage Manor or the Jewish Community Center main parking lot.

ST. PATRICK FESTIVAL: The 67th annual St. Patrick Parish Festival will be Thursday to Sunday at the church grounds, 225 N. Main St. Hubbard. The festival will include parish-made food, raffles, rides, games and live entertainment. Festival hours are 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Entertainment includes No Funk No Justice 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Dr. Zoots 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, Chris Higbee Band 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, The Feral Cats 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday and Old Skool Band 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday. The raffle drawing will be Sunday. Admission is free.

REUNION SET: The 126th Jacob Lawrence Family Reunion will be 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Harding Park Pavillion 3, 249 Roosevelt Drive, Hubbard. Bring a favorite dish or two to share, and your table settings and drinks. Call Anita at 330-282-2883 with any questions.

HOMEBREWING: Girard Free Library will host a homebrewing program at 6 p.m. Wednesday for ages 21 and older. The program will contain everything you need to get started on the beer brewing process Reservations are needed for the program by calling 330-545-2508.

PONY RIDES: Girard Free Library, 105 E Prospect St., will have pony rides for children 10 a.m. to noon Friday. There will be a petting zoo and face painting.

DRAWING CARTOONS: The McKinley Memorial library in Niles will offer "Drawing Cartoons with Character" at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the McKInley Birthplace Home. Cartoonist Douglas Laubacher will explain what it takes to create an original cartoon character. All supplies will be provided. For ages 12 and older. Registration is needed at 330-652-1704, ext. 3.

KIDZFEST: Kidzfest will be 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Courthouse Square, Warren. The free event includes a bounce house, rock wall, slide, birds of prey program, dunking booth and food.

PICNIC ON THE LAWN: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host a picnic on the lawn with music by Cin City and the Saints 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Guests should bring a blanket or lawn chair. There will be food and a basket raffle. The picnic begins at 5:30 p.m. and is hosted by the Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library.

FARM MEETING: The Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake and Trumbull County farm bureaus will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Magyar Farms, 2627 Cream Ridge Road, Orwell, for a special members-only meeting featuring Dale Arnold, director of energy, utility and local government policy with the Ohio Farm Bureau. The event will focus on key considerations for landowners when it comes to wind and solar projects, utility easements, oil and gas outreach, and other energy-related opportunities and concerns.

Registration opens at 6 p.m. and pizza and salad will be served before the program begins at 6:30 p.m.

This event is free for Farm Bureau members. Nonmembers are welcome to attend by joining Farm Bureau at the door or in advance. The cost to join is $120, which covers an annual membership for your entire household.
