Warren group hosts Juneteeth event

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION: The Community Concerned Citizens II in Warren will celebrate Juneteenth today and Saturday at Quinby Park, 525 Austin Ave. SW, Warren. The event will begin at 6 p.m. today with a DJ, food and activities. On Saturday, there will be a day filled with events, including a neighborhood drive-thru starting at 11 a.m. at Grace AME Church on Main Street. The lineup for the drive-thru begins at 10:30 a.m. at the church and will travel to Second Baptist Church then through Highland Terrace to Highland Avenue to Fifth Street to Tod Avenue to Sixth Street onto Palmyra Road to Austin Avenue. Saturday also will include live music, food, vendors, basket raffle and activities. Attendance is free.

Juneteenth is celebrated annually to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

LEMONADE STAND: Lemonade Days at Berk Enterprises will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the business, 1554 Thomas Road SE, Warren. The lemonade stand is part of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundations Lemonade Days, All proceeds from the event will benefit the foundation which helps in the fight against childhood cancer. The fundraising goal is $2,500.

FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY: Bristol Township will present “Food Truck Friday” from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the township park, corner of state Routes 45 and 88. In addition to the food trucks, activities for children will be available.

DEDICATION: Vienna Township trustees will hold a bridge dedication at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Copper Penny Building at the township center.

The dedication will follow the Vienna farmers market event.

ANNUAL SHOW: The Trumbull Senior Production will have its 15th annual show at 6 p.m. Saturday at Niles McKinley High School. Tickets are available at the door.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO MEET: The Niles Historical Society will meet at noon Saturday at the Ward Thomas House.

MEMBERSHIP MEETING: Trumbull County NAACP will host a membership meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Warren Trumbull County Library, For information call 330-469-3247.

CEMETERY BRIDGE: The Newton Township Trustees will host a dedication of the Newton Township Cemetery Bridge at 11 a,m. Saturday at the east side of the cemetery. The bridge is being dedicated to all veterans with a blessing to take place. A free luncheon will follow the ceremony at AMVETS Post 112. Donations from American Legion, AMVETS and Veterans of Foreign Wars have made the bridge possible.

GIRARD 1968: The Girard High School Class of 1968 is asking for reservations by Monday for the 75th Birthday Bash for classmates and friends being held from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 16 at Ciminero’s Banquet Hall in Niles.

The Birthday Bash, which is a casual event, is $35 per person and includes dinner, music, activities, mixes for BYOB and a celebration of being forever young.

VET TO VET CAFE: Grace Hospice and the Warren SCOPE Senior Citizens Center, 375 North Park Ave., are beginning a get together time for veterans called Vet to Vet Cafe. Starting at 2 p.m. Thursdays, coffee, water and snacks will be provided as veterans come together to discuss their military time in service to our country. Charles Ciapala of the Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission will be at the cafe to talk about veteran’s benefits and services. The plan is to determine a time and day to host these cafe events.

PLANT POWER: The Healthy Community Partnership’s Healthy Food Action Team, is excited to launch Plant Power! A Food Sovereignty Initiative this June.

Throughout the month of June, members of the Healthy Food action team will distribute free plants at farmers markets and community events in Youngstown and Warren. Plants being given away include but are not limited to nasturtiums, marigolds, basil, kale, tomatoes, okra, sage and collards which were all purchased from locally owned and operated green houses.

In addition, on June 17 at the Warren Farmer’s Market the team will also be raffling $25 gift cards for use at the Warren Farmer’s Market during the plant giveaway.

Community members can come to the following locations to pick up plants while supplies last:

Park Ave.; Seed Donation Event, 2 to 5 p.m. June 22, the Pocket Park at the Corner of McGuffey and Berkeley in Youngstown; and Cornerstone Collective Market, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28, Glenwood Corridor Parking Lot, 2649 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown.
