Operation Empty Medicine Cabinet to commence
COLLECTING EMPTY CONTAINERS: Operation Empty Medicine Cabinet will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, 5138 Enterprise Drive, Warren. The event is a prescription drug disposal program.
People can bring expired, unwanted and unused prescription medication for safe disposal. For information, call 330-675-2765.
PEDDLER EVENT: Newton Falls village will host the spring peddler 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on Broad Street in downtown Newton Falls. There will be various vendors, children’s activities and free comic book day.
NEW LOCATION: The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County hosted the grand opening of the new location of the Menagerie at 6000 Youngstown Warren Road, Niles The AWL is the only agency in the county that employs humane agents to file charges for cruelty, abuse and neglect of animals. KIDS CLUB: McKinley Memorial Library is hosting a Kids Club for children ages 5 to 11, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Birthplace Home.
Children are invited on the first and third Thursday of every month to enjoy a fun activity related to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). This week, students will choose from a variety of board games to play. Registration for the program is required at 330-652-1704, ext. 4.
CROCHETING PROGRAM: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host Needles, Hooks and Books 2 to 4 p.m. Fridays at the library. Participants are invited to bring their knitting, crocheting or sewing projects. No lessons will be provided.
ALUMNI BANQUET: The Hartford-Badger Alumni Association will host its 138th annual Alumni Banquet at 6 p.m. May 10, with registration starting at 5 p.m., at the Hartford Methodist Church hall, 6846 state Route 305, Hartford. The class of 1975 will be honored.
Cost is $17 per person and reservations need to be made by Friday to Helen Burns, secretary, at 330-772-3051.
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: Members of the Youngstown Press Club will observe World Press Freedom Day on Saturday by reading the names of 103 journalists killed last year while practicing their profession.
The annual event, which is part of a global recognition, will begin at noon at the Kirk Road Pavilion of the MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead, 6685 Kirk Road, Austintown.
The number of journalists killed in 2024 was the highest since the Committee to Protect Journalists began tracking those numbers in 1992.
In the Austintown observance, those reading the names of journalists slain last year will be: Mona Alexander, Jonathan Cambouris, Jordan Cohen, Lori Factor, JoAnn Kolarik, Dennis Mangan, Jim Michaels, George Nelson, Tony Paglia, Nick Rich, Chris Travers, Madison Tromler, Emily Webster Love and Ralph Zerbonia.
The event is free and open to the public and reservations are not required.
