Library traveling to space with talk

APOLLO 17: The Girard Free Library will host a presentation on Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon, at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Doug Fowler, a former adjunct professor at Youngstown State University's department of geology, physics and astronomy will discuss the discovery of astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmidt and Ronald Evans, who ventured to the moon in December 1972. Registration is needed at the library.

MAGIC OF FOUND FAMILY: McKinley Memorial Library will present "The Magic of Found Family: In Conversation with Author TJ Klune" streamed live online at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Klune will chat about his "Cerulean Chronicles," with special emphasis on his newest in the series, "Somewhere Beyond the Sea." The talk is presented in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium.

CRAFT WORKSHOP: The Girard Free Library will host a craft workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The event will have participants making a crochet crab keychain. Those attending should be familiar with how to chain and single crochet. Materials will be provided. Registration is needed.

KIDS CLUB: McKinley Memorial Library presents Kids Club 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles. Children ages 5 to 11 years are invited on the first and third Thursday of every month for a new club. Each meeting will feature a new activity related to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). This month, participants will design and test a custom marble run to see who can build the fastest track. Registration is required at 330-652-1704, ext. 4.

MARINE CORPS GIVEAWAY: The Tri-State Detachment Marine Corps League 494, VFW Austintown 4237 and VFW Hubbard 3767, in cooperation with Ohio Charities and Sparkle Market, will give away 53 $50 Sparkle gift certificates to military veterans at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Austintown VFW, 4150 Mahoning Ave. Veterans should use the back door entrance and bring valid proof of their military service: DD-214, Veterans Administration ID or a veteran ID from the Veterans Service Commission. These gift certificates are left over from a Christmas giveaway.

POLAR PLUNGE: The Special Olympics Ohio Polar Plunge "Freezin for a Reason" will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mosquito Lake State Park beach. The Polar Plunge is the largest community fundraising event, dedicated to supporting athletes from Special Olympics Ohio. Participants, whether individuals or teams, collect pledges from friends, family and their communities to take an icy plunge with some dressed in wackiest, most outrageous costumes. Registration is 11 a.m. to noon, awards will be given at 12:30 p.m. with the plunge at 1 p.m. A plunge after party will be at 2 p.m. at Cortland Moose Lodge. ORGANIZED CRIME: The Howland Historical Society will host a program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Howland Township administration building. Guest speaker is Sean Posey, an author and historian, who will speak on "Beware the Black Hand: A History of Early Organized Crime in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania." The event is free and light refreshments will be served.

FAMILY DAY: The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown will offer a Family Day at 1:30 p.m. Sunday that will include tours, demonstrations, a gallery scavenger hunt and art making. The event is for children of all ages and their families

SMARTS OPEN HOUSE: Students Motivated by the Arts (SMARTS) Center, 25 Boardman St., Youngstown, will host an open house 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday for those 18 months to age 5. The event is open to the public with registration needed.
