Craft show offers a helping hand

HELPING HANDS: The Helping Hands Craft Show at Howland Community Church, 198 Niles Cortland Road SE, Howland, is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. There will be up to 30 vendors and each one will donate an item for a raffle. There will be a door prize and a 50 / 50 raffle. The kitchen will be open with fresh made lunch and dessert, and there also will be a bake sale.
The show supports the Client Choice Pantry, Free Fellowship Meal, Operation Shoeleather and other mission projects.
THERAPY RABBITS: Sara Coinin of My Therapy Bunnies, will present a talk for adults at 2 p.m. Friday at the Warren Trumbull County Public Library on rabbit care education and how the therapy bunnies can benefit residents.
DYNASTY HISTORY: The Warren Library Series will feature History of the Romanov Dynasty. The two-part series, presented by Susan Cannavino, features the story of Nicholas II, Alexandra, their four girls, and their son, Alexei. It also includes Rasputin and the end of the Romanov dynasty.
Part one is 6 p.m. today and part two is 6 p.m. Nov. 14, both at the Warren Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Registration is optional. To sign up, call the Reference Department at 330-399-8807, ext. 200. The events are free.
CHRISTMAS WALK: The Christmas Walk sponsored by the James A. Garfield Historical Society is 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The walk also will be Nov. 15 to 17. Tour four decorated homes and a local church that also will offer a homemade lunch. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the James A. Garfield Historical Society, 8107 Main St., Garrettsville.
PRESS CLUB LUNCHEON: The role of emerging nonprofit local newsrooms will be the focus of a Nov. 14 Youngstown Press Club luncheon. The event will begin at noon at the main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 305 Wick Ave. The featured speaker will be Loretta Chao, head of startup studio and local news innovation at the American Journalism Project, whose topic will be “Empowering communities through local news.”
The mission of the American Journalism Project is to support local journalism. The AJP makes grants to nonprofit news organizations, partners with communities to launch new organizations and coaches leaders as they grow and sustain their newsrooms. Appearing with Chao will be representatives of Signal Ohio, a three-year-old network of independent, community-led, nonprofit newsrooms, which is funded in part by the AJP. Lila Mills, editor-in-chief of Signal Cleveland, and Mary Ellen Huesken, a copy editor for Signal Ohio newsrooms, will discuss how their organization is changing the local media landscape.

The program is sponsored by the Edward M. Barr Foundation and the library. A portion of event proceeds will go to the club’s college scholarship fund.
COPING WITH GRIEF: McKinley Memorial Library will present “Coping with Grief During the Holidays” from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles. Kim Calhoun, LSW Bereavement Facilitator at Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley by Compassus, will guide this one-time grief support session for anyone mourning the loss of a loved one during the holiday season. FOLK CONCERT: McKinley Memorial Library will present a “Folk Concert with Simple Gifts Music” 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles.
The award-winning band Simple Gifts will perform a wide variety of ethnic folk music featuring 12 unique instruments. Following the concert, band members Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon will chat about the different instruments used. Registration is required at 330-652-1704, ext. 3.
TCGS TO MEET: The Trumbull County Genealogical Society will meet 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren.
Those in attendance will talk about how our families have celebrated Thanksgiving through the years. Do you have a Mayflower ancestor? All meetings are free and open to the public.
BOO SQUAD: For the eighth year in a row, the Boo Squad Fund is making it their mission to help families with Thanksgiving meals. The Squad will be collecting donations throughout October and the beginning of November.

The Boo Squad is a volunteer group of kids ages 7+. The goal of this group is to teach children about Teamwork, Volunteerism and Compassion.
