MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN: The Harriet Taylor Upton Association's membership campaign is underway. People can renew their association's membership to receive program information and a newsletter. Renewal forms are available at www.uptonhouse.org
BOARDMAN DRUM NIGHT: The Boardman Band Drum Night will be 7 p.m. today at Spartan Stadium. Drumlines from Austintown, Howland, Hubbard, Liberty, Mathews, Poland, Pymatuning Valley, Springfield and Boardman will perform and then play with all bands together. Admission is $2 per person with senior citizens admitted free. In case of inclement weather, the event will be inside the high school gymnasium.
BOOK SALE: The Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library will host a book sale Tuesday to Saturday. The Friends will be selling a wide variety of items in the auditorium of the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Museum. The Friends preview sale will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Memberships for the Friends will be available at the door.
TROPICAL BATS: McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host a Zoom program on tropical bats at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The program will be presented by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute affiliated scientists.
CIVIL WAR HOSPITAL: Center Brook Manor, 8745 state Route 45, south of Bloomfield Center, is hosting a candlelight Civil War hospital tour 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Participants will visit a theatrical surgical room with surgery in progress, the recovery rooms with an apothecary and U.S. sanitary commission, a sewing room where gowns for the wounded are made and a Civil War embalming area and funeral parlor. The tours are every 30 minutes and require advanced reservations at www.centerbrook.manor.com/ events. Tickets are $13.50 each.
BAND ALUMNI: The Girard High School Band will be joined by alumni band members for the halftime show Friday at Arrowhead stadium. Those alumni wanting to take part are asked to register at 330-545-5431 ext 2.
ROYAL RANGERS: A craft and vendor show benefiting the Royal Rangers youth group will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church, 2640 Parkman Road, Warren. ESSAY CONTEST: The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3767 and auxiliary will host the annual written essay contest called Patriot's Pen and audio essay contest called Voice of Democracy. The Patriot's Pen's theme is "My Voice in America's Democracy" for students in grades sixth to eighth. The Voice of Democracy theme is "America Today: Our Forefathers' Vision" for students in grades ninth to 12th. Deadline is Oct. 31.Winning students are eligible for monetary rewards. PLANT SWAP: Girard Free Library will host a plant swap noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Those attending can bring a healthy, pest-free plant or cutting to swap. People can share gardening information and take home something new.
