WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: Members of the Youngstown Press Club will observe World Press Freedom Day on Friday by reading the names of 99 journalists killed during the past year while practicing their profession.
The event, which is part of a global recognition, will begin at noon at the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St., Youngstown.
The featured speaker will be Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Dellick.
The number of journalists killed last year in connection with their occupations far surpassed the 67 slain in 2022 and the 45 killed in 2021.
At least 95 journalists and media workers have been killed in the Israel-Gaza war since it began Oct. 7, according to preliminary figures from the Committee to Protect Journalists.
