Astronomical Society readies for eclipse

SOLAR GLASSES: The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society will set up an informational booth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and will sell solar glasses for viewing the April 8 total solar eclipse. Glasses are $2 and are ISO approved.

Locations include Newton Falls IGA, Village Sparkle in Columbiana and Sparkle in Cornersburg.

PRESS CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS: The Youngstown Press Club is seeking applications for two $2,000 scholarships it will award this year. The application deadline is Monday.

The awards will go to college juniors or seniors residing in Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Mercer or Lawrence counties, who are majoring in journalism or a related field.

Applicants must: Submit proof of a grade point average of 3.0 or higher; be entering their junior or senior year in the 2024-25 academic year; submit at least two writing or broadcast samples.

The scholarships are funded by the Frank and Pearl Gelbman Foundation and by club membership dues, proceeds from club events, direct donations from individuals and the club’s corporate sponsors.

CEREAL DRIVE: The McKinley Memorial Library will collect cereal April 1 through 27 to benefit Niles Community Services. All brands and flavors of cereal are welcome. Make sure all donations are unopened and unexpired. Donations may be dropped off at the library or at Niles Community Services.

AAUW TO MEET: The Trumbull County chapter of the American Association of University Women will meet Monday at Fowler United Methodist Church, 3426 Youngstown Kingsville Road. The program will be about Mary Lincoln, presented by Traci Manning, curator of education for the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. The program chair is Kay Gray, and the hospitality committee includes Valerie Kokor, chair, with Jane Cribbs and Phyllis Hammond.
