POLAR PLUNGE: The 2024 Mosquito Lake Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics will be Saturday at the Cortland Moose Family Center, 6400 state Route 46, Mecca, with the plunge starting at 1 p.m. at Mosquito Lake State Park beach. Preregistration is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Moose Lodge. On Saturday, registration is from 11 a.m. to noon at Mosquito Lake beach. SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS: Scholastic Art Awards will host an art award ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ford Theater at Youngstown State University. There is free admission. All gold key, silver key and honorable mentions are welcome.
STORIES IN THE SNOW: The McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host Stories in the Snow 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday for children ages 5 and older. This will be a special outdoor storytime at the library and on the grounds of the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial. Participants will venture outside for a story about the snow, then warm up inside the library with a snowflake craft and hot cocoa. All supplies will be provided. TALENT SHOW: The Niles McKinley High School Drama Club will present Niles' Got Talent at 7 p.m. Saturday at the high school auditorium. Cost is $15 per person. The audience will be a judge with a ticket for your favorite act. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
JA FUNDRAISER: Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio announces a fundraiser to benefit their financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career-readiness programs in Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Partnering with artist James Massacci -- a world-renowned, Florida-based artist and designer from Warren -- they are raffling an original painting with a retail value between $7,000 and $8,000 titled "Freedom," which features birds in flight. Investment is $10 per ticket or five tickets for $45. Tickets will be sold through Friday. A winner will be announced on Jan. 22. Delivery of art will be arranged once a winner is drawn. POETRY WORKSHOP: A Blackout Poetry Workshop is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles. Participants will create poems without putting pen to paper. Utilizing existing text, the poet will black out unwanted words with a permanent marker and arrange the rest of the words to create a poem. All supplies will be provided. STEM INNOVATION DAY: Valley STEM +ME2 Academy will host a STEM Innovation Day, a hands-on event designed to inspire and engage students in grades 6-8 in the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
