Trees coming to new green space

TREE PLANTING: Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership and Plant Ahead Ohio will host a community tree planting at the new Riverside Park, located at the former St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, 1307 Tod Ave. NW, Warren. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Parking will be available across the street at Warren Primary Care and supplies will be provided. TNP received a grant through AARP’s Community Challenge to turn the space into useable greenspace following the demolition of the hospital.

LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW: Greene Eagle Winery, 2576 Davis Peck Road, is hosting a fall event “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” to benefit SCOPE at 3 p.m. Saturday. The event is the annual visit from the headless horseman. There will be a haunted hayride starting at 4 p.m. at $2 per ride or ride all day for $5. At 6:30 p.m. the witches will perform from William Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth.” Guests should bring lawn chairs or blankets. There will be food trucks and various raffles.

QUARTER AUCTION: A quarter auction benefiting Paws for Ability will be Saturday at the Girard Aerie 2172 at 26 Wilson Ave. Doors open at 4 p.m. with bidding starting at 5 p.m. The nonprofit organization trains service dogs to work with the disabled. For information, call Diane at 330-307-6293.

CANDIDATE NIGHTS: Lordstown will host a candidates night 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the village administration building on Salt Springs Road. Candidates for mayor and council have been invited to attend. There will only be one-on-one discussions and no debating.

TNR BASKET RAFFLE: TNR of Warren, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the feral and stray cat population by sterilization, is hosting a basket raffle and pancake breakfast 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Masonic Lodge in Cortland, 3263 Everett Hull Road. There also will be a lottery tree raffle and 50-50 raffle. TNR of Warren is not a shelter, nor do they accept cats for adoption. They are a trap, neuter, return organization only.

AUTUMN LUNCHEON: Warren Women’s Club is celebrating autumn with a special luncheon get-together at 1 p.m. Sunday at the historic club house, 708 N. Park Ave., Warren. The cost is $20 per person and reservations are a must as there is limited seating. Contact Sandy Mahaffey at 330-518-6927 to make reservations.

SADDLE CLUB SHOW: The Brookfield Saddle Club will host its third and last show of the season 10 a.m. Saturday at 696 Bedford Road SE. There is a $5 fee per horse and $1 per class.

On Friday, the club is hosting a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. and is open to anyone who has shown or watched any of the shows or is friend of horse shows. For details, visit the club’s Facebook page.

BOOK SALE: The Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host a book sale Tuesday through Sunday at the memorial museum. The Friends are selling a variety of items. Donations may be dropped off 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. The sale is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily,

PUPS AND PAGES: The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave., Warren, will host Pups and Pages 6 to 7:30 p.m. today. Children can gain confidence and improve their reading skills reading to an uncritical dog. Children in kindergarten to sixth grade can sign up for a 15-minute session to read to registered therapy dogs from PAWS Therapy Team. To register, call 330-399-8807 Ext. 206.

GARRETT WONDERS FUND: Shelley Wonders, the mother of Garrett Wonders, a 1997 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, created a GoFundMe fundraiser recently to help ensure her son’s legacy lives on through the nonprofit organization called the Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund.

The Memorial Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)3 named for Garrett, a cyclist training for the 2004 Olympic Trials who was struck and killed by a careless driver.

Since creating the fund, Wonders has been able to award more than $85,000 in scholarships to students.

Garrett Wonders’ 20th annual birthday ride will take place Saturday.

MOVIE CLUB MEETS: The Movie Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the McKinley Birthplace Home, Niles. Participants can watch the selected movie at home and meet fellow movie buffs for friendly discussion. This month, participants will watch “Knives Out” directed by Rian Johnson.

GOLF SCRAMBLE: The Don Gaudio Golf For Kids’ Sake Golf Scramble to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Ohio and Western Pa. will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Friday at Pine Lakes Golf Club, 6233 W. Liberty St., Hubbard.

Included will be 18 holes of golf with cart, continental breakfast, hot dog lunch, dinner, all beverages provided, door prizes, team prizes, hole in one contest, putting contests, driving contests, closest to the pin contests, skins and mulligans.
