ESSAY AND ART CONTEST: Heritage Accord is partnering with the Newton Falls Public Library, 204 S. Canal St., to sponsor a "Youth Essay and Art Contest." The contest is open to all students, from kindergarten through 12th grade, in public schools, home schooled and virtual schools.
The theme for both the essay and the art contest is "My Hometown." The winning essay will be read and the winning art will be on display Nov. 5, during the daylong 80th anniversary of the dedication of the historic Newton Falls Community Center.
Two grand prizes will be awarded: one for best essay and one for the best art submission. Deadline for submittals is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1.
Entries are to be submitted to the library with the entrant's name, grade and contact information. Do not leave submitted materials outside of the library or in the library drop boxes. The library is open from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
HEART BALL: The American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, will host its annual Heart of Tri-County Heart Ball, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and silent auction, on Nov. 3 at Waypoint 4180. A formal dinner and program will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a live auction and music. The event is the culmination of the Association's yearlong work through the Heart of Tri-County campaign that is focused on funding research, education, and raising critical funds to support the lifesaving work of the organization. Co-chairs of this year's Heart Ball are James and Dr. Christina Dascenzo.
The dollars raised through the Heart of Tri-County campaign fund the mission of the American Heart Association to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives while supporting priority critical issues in the tri-county area including blood pressure programs, and hands-only CPR education and training all supporting the association's 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal, reducing barriers to healthcare access and quality.
This year's Heart of Tri-County Heart Ball is being hosted by WFMJ's Derek Steyer.

RUMMAGE SALE FUNDRAISER: After being postponed for two years, the Presbyterian Women group of First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon, Pa., is again hosting its annual Rummage Sale fundraiser, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 5 at the church.
Featured will be books, holiday decorations, homemade baked goods, baskets and more. There also will be a signed, framed lithograph of Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward. Baskets range from $5 to $80. Gift cards from local businesses also will be available, from Combine Brothers Restaurant, Domino's Pizza, YSU football, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Animal Appeal, the Arms Museum, Youngstown Symphony, Handel's Ice Cream, Daffin's Candies, Mr. D's, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, Ballet Western Reserve, Shenango Valley Cinema and more.
FALL OPEN HOUSE: Model trains of all shapes and sizes can be seen at the Youngstown Model Railroad Association Fall Open House, from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 5, 6 and 12, 13 and Dec. 3, 4 and 10, 11 at the club, located at the corner of Raccoon Road and Four Mile Run Road in Austintown.
The Youngstown Model Railroad Association is one of the few clubs in the country that has two complete displays, "O" scale and the smaller "HO." Both extensive layouts feature more than 100 scale miles of track each.
The "HO" layout is currently completing the steel mill complex and its track work along with several upgrades to lighting and buildings in the city and industrial park areas.
The "O" scale layout is currently undergoing a major renovation as the locomotive roundhouse area is being completely redone and several scenery upgrades are being done on the entire layout.
Cost is $5 per person and children 11 and under with an adult are free.
SALUTE TO VETERANS: A Salute to Our Veterans: The 80th Anniversary of the Newton Falls Community Center, A Historic U.S.O. Facility, will be 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the community center, 52 E. Quarry St., Newton Falls.
Events will begin with a reception at 9 a.m. for veterans, active military and first responders, followed by opening ceremony at 10 and an open house until 2 p.m. There will be exhibits, presentations and a toy drive.
A dance will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the Dave Banks Big Band will play from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Attire from the 1940s is encouraged.
Cost is $25 per person.

FLAG WAVING: A Veterans Day Flag Waving event will be noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 11, at the Trumbull County GOP Headquarters, 1195 Niles Cortland Road, Warren. Wear red, white and blue and bring US flags or military flags.
CHRISTMAS WALK: James A. Garfield Historical Society, 8107 Main St., Garrettsville, is sponsoring the 20th Celebration Christmas Walk from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5 and Nov. 11 and 12, and from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 6 and 13, at the church.
Cost is $15 and no reservations are needed to tour the homes. Participants will be asked to remove shoes while touring the homes.

• Sunday: The Real Ghosts of Mosquito Lake, 7 p.m. Other parks may have ghosts in a manor or sasquatch in their woods, but Mosquito Lake has real ghosts roaming the shores. Fun for all ages, come see the special guests
