McKinley birthday party coming Saturday in Niles

PRESIDENT'S BIRTHDAY: An open house will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the McKinley Birthplace Home in Niles to celebrate the birthday of William McKinley, the nation's 25th president. The McKinley Birthplace Home will be open for guided, self-guided or audio tours. President McKinley (portrayed by Mike Wilson) will make an appearance. The library requests that in-person participants wear masks.

MID-WINTER FIELD DAY: The Warren Amateur Radio Association will have its Mid-Winter Field Day 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday at the cabin at Stevens Park in Niles, off North Crandon Avenue and Hughes Street SE. The event is for anyone interested in amateur radio or emergency communications or who are members of ARES or RACES, police, fire and emergency medical technicians. There will be a chance to talk to HF-VHF-UHF radio and take and build antennas.

Plans are to set up at 9 a.m. Saturday and take down by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 30.

HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY: International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, hosted by the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. The virtual program is "Running Away from the Worst."

Federation Community Shaliach Marom Shmueli will share the story of his family's escape from Europe during the Holocaust, and the story of the family members who didn't make it out. Visit

The United Nations General Assembly designated Jan. 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This annual day of commemoration honors the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.

SWCD ELECTION: The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual supervisor election. Re-elected to the Trumbull SWCD board of supervisors is Lynn Parker and Jan Soloman. They will serve through December 2024. They were both sworn in recently by state Rep. Michael O'Brien, D-Warren. The SWCD is primarily a source of conservation information, education and programming and outreach and support for landowners and organizations interested in natural resource management.
