Tourneys give students college discount

WARREN -- National Stop Bullying again is partnering with Eastern Gateway Community College to help send people to college.

As a part of its partnership and the Mary Eva Howard National Stop Bullying Initiative, the organization hosted a "Bowling for College" tournament Oct. 10 and 17.

The winner of the Oct. 10 tournament is Tyra Scott of Pittsburgh. Scott will be attending EGCC for business administration. That event took place at Boardman Lanes in Youngstown.

The group had a second tournament Oct. 17 at Champion Lanes in Warren. Thomas Williams and Derek Smeltzer, both of Warren, won the event. They also will be attending EGCC for business administration.

This isn't the first time the group has helped send people to college. In September, the organization was able to send two Warren residents to EGCC.

The partnership between the college and the organization allows the group to help people receive a higher education at an extremely affordable cost -- $1 per credit hour.

Director Robert Harris said the National Stop Bullying organization provides workshops to schools, community centers and libraries to teach children, families and administrators about bully sensitivity, anti-violence, homicide- and suicide prevention, and gang violence intervention.

The initative was named after Mary Eva Howard, who was the organization's national student representative and who died after being hit by a car in Erie, Pa.
