YWCA AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS: Two area high school seniors were awarded a total of $20,000 in scholarship money at the 26th annual YWCA Mahoning Valley Young Women with Bright Futures Awards program held virtually on Zoom in May.
Kasey Sheridan, a senior at Girard High School, took home the $12,000 first-place scholarship. Sheridan was also the winner of the YWCA's Bright Futures Essay Contest. She plans to attend Cleveland State University and pursue a communications degree with a minor in theater.
Kaitlyn Helt, a senior at McDonald High School, was awarded the second-place $8,000 scholarship. She intends to enroll in Youngstown State University to pursue a degree in business administration.
The scholarships are funded by the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and are awarded to two young women attending college or university in northeast Ohio or western Pennsylvania.
Thirty senior high school women were nominated by the teachers and school administrators, and were recognized for their leadership skills, academic achievement, creativity and volunteerism at the awards banquet. All participants in the Young Women with Bright Futures program received a $500 award funded by Denise DeBartolo York.

CENTER SEEKS ASSISTANCE: The Ashtabula Arts Center has reached out to Ohio congressmen Sherrod Brown, Dave Joyce and Rob Portman, urging them to advocate for federal relief for arts organizations struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Arts Center is facing a loss of $250,000 in revenue in the next year, due mainly to stage productions being shut down indefinitely, as well as diminished tuition from classes and private music instruction. Currently, all available classes at the Arts Center -- visual arts, ballet and private voice lessons -- are virtual via Zoom.
