America Makes selects companies to lead $12.4M defense project

2 min read

Northrop Grumman Corp. and Fastech LLC have been selected this week to lead a $12.4 million project directed by Youngstown-based America Makes and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining.

Funded through the U.S. Department of War, the project seeks to validate that metallic additive manufacturing (AM) materials can reliably replace traditional alloys in Department of War weapon system components. Project teams will select candidate parts, define performance requirements, and generate shared, validated data demonstrating that the AM material meets or exceeds the critical properties of the legacy alloys it is intended to substitute.

The goal is to enable broad, cross-platform use of AM materials, reduce redundant testing, and accelerate qualification so AM solutions can be adopted quickly and confidently across the defense industrial base.

Northrop Grumman's project partners are the Georgia Institute of Technology and Contextualize LLC.

Fastech will be working with Pacific Engineering Inc.; Auburn University/National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence; Texas A&M University; Prime Tech Data Management; AML3D; and Westmoreland Mechanical Testing & Research Inc.

America Makes is the nation's leading public-private partnership for additive manufacturing technology and education. America Makes members from industry, academia, government and workforce and economic development organizations work together to accelerate the adoption of AM and the nation's global manufacturing competitiveness.
