Quaker Steak & Lube cuts Boardman location

Quaker Steak & Lube’s Boardman location has closed to become the second franchised restaurant under the JDK Management Co. umbrella to end operations this month.

The business announced the move Monday morning on social media.

“After three decades of service in Boardman, including the last 15 years in our current location, we have made the very difficult decision to permanently close the Boardman, Ohio Quaker Steak & Lube location, effective immediately,” the post said. “We want to extend a heartfelt ‘ThanQ’ to our guests, team members & community for your loyalty, support and countless memories throughout the years. It has truly been our privilege to serve you.”

The chicken wing and steak-themed eatery, with its roots in Sharon, Pa., started locally in a small, standalone building in front of Boardman Lanes. It relocated to a larger site in The Shops at Boardman Park complex along U.S. Route 224, next to Boardman Park.

On July 5, the Quaker Steak franchise in Clearwater, Florida, ceased operations, according to thestreet.com website and the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Based in Bloomsburg, Pa., JDK foretold of the closings in a letter posted June 29 on its website.

“(JDK) today announced a strategic update to its Quaker Steak & Lube (QSL) restaurant portfolio, which will include the closure of a small number of locations over the coming months,” the letter says. “Each decision reflects a careful, individualized review of lease terms, local market conditions, and long-term growth potential. The plan reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to building a resilient, guest-focused portfolio positioned for long-term success.”

Brian Klingerman, CEO, said, “This is the right strategic move for our organization, and it allows us to focus our energy and investment where we can deliver the Quaker Steak & Lube experience at its best.”

A call to request additional comment from JDK was not returned.

Founded in 1974, Quaker Steak was part of the popular Three By the River restaurant complex in Sharon that included in later years the Hot Rod Cafe and Tully’s Pub and Grille.

The original Quaker Steak ownership sold its stake to TravelCenters of America in March 2016. A multistate hospitality operator, JDK took over in April 2021. The privately held company also operates Perkins American Food Co. and hotel properties.

In a November 2012 news release, Quaker Steak touted more than 60 locations. As of Monday, its website listed 25 restaurants, including the original Sharon site, Austintown, Cortland and Salem. JDK operates three Perkins in Howland, Bazetta and Boardman townships.

Workers at the Boardman restaurant have been offered jobs at Quaker Steak’s nearby locations. The company noted that Quaker Steak gift cards, coupons and Revved-Up Rewards points and rewards will be honored.

“The relationships we’ve built here in Boardman mean more to us than words can express,” the company said.

Starting at $3.85/week.
