Consumer uncertainty slows April auto sales

New vehicle sales in April fell approximately 15% in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties compared to the same time last year, the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association reported this month.

Franchised dealers in the tricounty area sold 2,442 new vehicles last month compared to 2,854 in April 2025. For the year, 8,752 vehicles left Valley lots, a 2.8% drop from 2025.

The association’s 21-county region fared slightly better. Member dealerships sold 2,109 fewer new vehicles in April compared to their April 2025 performance of 23,124 for a drop of 9.12%. Looking at units sold in 2026, dealers are approximately 5,000 short of the 77,343 sales in 2025. That represents a loss of 6.42%.

“New car sales are in line with national results, having slowed in Northern Ohio when compared to April of last year,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, association president.

“Used vehicles are pacing consistently with 2025 as consumers face the continued affordability concern, along with another headwind from fluctuations in gas prices. Sales will continue to be challenged in 2026 as consumer confidence remains an issue.”

Used car sales in the Mahoning Valley fell by 101 units when analyzing April’s 2025 and 2026 numbers. For the year, dealership witnessed 485 more used cars sold compared to 2025.

Although it reported a loss of 668 new vehicles in April compared to April 2025, Chevrolet was the new vehicle sales leader last month with 2,678. Ford’s sales of 2,491 (2,662, April 2025) keeps the brand in second place, ahead of Honda’s 2,252 new vehicle sales (2,249, April 2025). In fourth and fifth, Kia stayed ahead of Toyota with 1,903 and 1,630 sales, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Subaru (1,242), Hyundai (1,080), Jeep (972), Ram (853) and Nissan (806).

Although it remains in the negative in year-to-date sales, Tesla saw a boost in April sales. The EV company sold 313 units last month (259, April 2025).

Boardman Subaru sold 300 new and used vehicles in April to pace Valley sales. The dealership was followed by Ken Ganley Kia of Boardman (231), Cochran Buick GMC (231), Fairway Chevrolet GMC of Calcutta (188), Cochran Honda of Boardman (187), Greenwood Chevrolet (176), Fairway Ford (161), Klaben Ford Lincoln of Warren (160), Toyota of Boardman (147) and Preston Hyundai (143).

For the year, Boardman Subaru surpassed the 600-mark in new vehicle sales with 638. In April, the dealership sold 189 new cars.
