Nonprofit board training workshop set for May 7

On Board! Board Training Workshop will take place 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Grand Resort, 9511 E. Market St., Howland.

The program is open to nonprofit leaders and individuals who serve or are interested in serving on nonprofit boards. Leadership Mahoning Valley will partner with The Association of Fundraising Professionals Mahoning/Shenango Chapter to present the program.

Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors and what it takes to be an effective board member.

Topics will include foundational best practices in nonprofit governance. The training will provide participants with an understanding of the sector, the basic tenets of governance, and their individual roles and responsibilities as nonprofit leaders.

There will also be a special emphasis on charitable laws regarding fundraising practices. The On Board! Board Training Program is a resource for those wishing to enhance their understanding of their duty to their organization, the nonprofit sector and the community.

Beth Short, director of Charitable Outreach and Education for the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section will be the guest presenter.

Short has spent her career working for and with nonprofit organizations. Her passion for the nonprofit sector is evidenced by her professional and volunteer background working with charities as a staff member, board member, consultant and volunteer for large and small organizations.

Her work in the Charitable Law Section focuses on the development of strategies aimed at strengthening the nonprofit sector. She is a graduate of the Ohio State University and Ohio University and serves as president-elect of the National Association of State Charity Officials.

Participants who complete the daylong training program will be included in the new Leadership Mahoning Valley Board Match program which will connect individuals interested in serving on boards, with nonprofit organizations in need of board members.

Charitable leaders who complete the training will also receive completion credit for the program and their names listed on the Attorney General’s webpage as acknowledgement of their commitment to learning about their important roles as sector leaders. They will also receive a completion certificate that can be shared with funders to illustrate their organization’s commitment to sound board governance practices.

The day will begin with registration, a continental breakfast and networking at 8 a.m., followed by the program. Lunch is included. Reservations are required and the cost to attend is $60 per person. Groups of six may register at a reduced rate of $300 per group of six.
