New jobless claims jump 2,000-plus
Ohio jobless claims jumped by more than 2,000 applicants for the week of Dec. 21 through Dec. 27, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Friday.
Ohioans filed 10,463 initial unemployment claims last week, which was 2,212 more than the previous week. The agency said that approximately 2,000 of those have been flagged for additional verification.
Ohioans filed 55,173 continued unemployment claims last week, which was 1,851 more than the previous week.
The total number of claims filed from Dec. 21 through Dec. 27 was 65,636.
Ohio’s unemployment rate in September was 4.8%. The national unemployment rate in September was 4.4%. Ohio’s labor force participation rate in September was 62.4%. The national labor force participation rate in September was 62.4%.
The four-county area has the following unemployment rates for September: Mahoning County, 4.7%; Trumbull County, 5.1%; Ashtabula County, 3.4%; and Columbiana County, 4.5%. Of the region’s workforce of 282,400, 12,900 were without work for the month. That represented an unemployment rate of 4.57%.
