YSU BUSINESS STUDENT AWARDED: Lexie Gentry, a human resource management major in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University, is the 2024 recipient of the Raymond J. Shuster Award, which recognizes excellence in the study of Human Resource Management.
The award seeks out an individual who is dedicated to a career in human resources, as shown by completing human resource internships and taking steps to advance their knowledge in the profession, including human resource certifications.
Gentry has been an officer in the YSU Society for Human Resource Management, competed in competitions, including the Ohio Human Resource Games, Quest (2024 winning team) and the SHRM Case Competition.
She has had two internships, with the latter leading to a full-time job offer at Meijer, and has already completed her SHRM Certified Professional credential.
The scholarship was established in 1984 by YSU SHRM, after Shuster's retirement, to honor his dedication to the professional development of human resource students. The award is given to students who are graduating this academic year, have at least a 3.4 GPA and are a human resource major.
TOWER CHALLENGE RETURNS: The second annual Tough Tower competition will be June 8-9 at 8900 Mahoning Ave., North Jackson. Event sponsors STG Communication Services and Tri-County Tower started the event in 2023 to draw attention to career opportunities in the telecommunications industry.
The event will feature eight teams of two tower technicians each from across the United States. All competitors are professionals in the telecommunications industry. Teams will compete in eight preliminary industry-related challenges from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 8 on the ground and on multiple training towers. Starting 9 a.m. June 9, the semifinal and final rounds will take place.
Challenges include rescue and installation to crane maneuverability.
FORMER RESIDENT RECOGNIZED: Phillip Genchur, formerly of Newton Falls, was honored May 7 with a Federal Executive Board Award in Distinguished Diversity in Kansas City, Missouri, for his contributions and community drives for the homeless in Kansas City, and his celebration of diversity and inclusion at his local Social Security office in Kansas City.
Genchur, a claims specialist at the Kansas City South Field Office for the Social Security Administration, also is a published poet and has won several awards in the field, according to a news release.
