NURSING PROF WINS AWARD: Kent State University at Trumbull professor and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Coordinator, Dr. Gina Severino, has earned the Ohio Nurses Association's Excellence in Political Action Award.
Severino has been an ONA member for 36 years and joined ONA's Health Policy Council as an alternate in 2016 before becoming a full committee member in 2019. In her role, she represents ONA District Three at numerous state and local political events. She also attends the yearly Nurses Day at the State House NDASH events.
As a professor of nursing, she teaches health care policy courses at the undergraduate BSN and the RN-BSN program level. Severino earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Kent State University in 2018 and became Kent State Trumbull's BSN coordinator in 2021.
FOUNDATION GIVES: The Warren Area Chamber of Commerce Education, Civic and Cultural Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and a $5,000 grant to Coleman Health Services.
The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation has received $10,000 from the foundation to help produce its 2022 Trumbull County Youth Baseball / Softball League Nights with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. This program will grant every youth baseball and softball league in Trumbull County the opportunity to experience Scrappers baseball at no cost to the player or player's family.
Coleman Health Services will use the money to support its "Unmute the Uncomfortable" Symposium. This program aims to present a candid conversation about the relevant and important issues of racial justice, mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The grant awarded will fund admission for Trumbull County Students to attend the symposium.
Since 1991, the Warren Area Chamber of Commerce Education, Civic and Cultural Foundation has given nearly $2 million to nonprofit organizations within Trumbull County.
AHA RECOGNIZES YSU: Youngstown State University is being recognized for its commitment to employee health and well-being by the American Heart Association through its 2021 Workplace Health Achievement Index.
YSU was recognized in the Workplace Health Achievement Index with a silver status.
The index is a free web-based scorecard that looks at organizational best practices and aggregates employee health data to evaluate the overall quality and comprehensiveness of workplace health programs. More than 450 organizations completed the index assessment this year, which evaluated the time period of July 2020 to June 2021.
Of the organizations that completed the assessment, nearly all earned gold (43 percent), silver (31 percent) or bronze (19 percent) status.
The association created the index in 2016 with its CEO Roundtable,a leadership collaborative of more than 45 members from some of America's largest companies, to apply evidence-based approaches to support employee health.
LOCAL VET TECH STUDENTS RECEIVE PERFECT SCORES: For the third consecutive year, veterinary technology students at Kent State University at Trumbull earned the highest three-year average passage rate in Ohio on the Veterinary Technician National Exam.
Kent State Trumbull's 2021 veterinary technology graduates took the exam, and all received 100 percent. The program, which is administered through Kent State University at Tuscarawas, now has a three-year average passage rate of 100 percent. The national three-year average score is approximately 70.5 percent.
For more than five years, students have completed many of their classes at the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County. A few years ago, Kent State opened a veterinary technology laboratory that resembles a mini-veterinary clinic inside the shelter, offering radiology, laboratory, surgery and a pharmacy. Students also get experience at multiple off-site large animal farms, exotic facilities, and a research university for laboratory medicine.
REYERS RANKED NO. 1: Footwear Insight magazine has named Reyers at the Eastwood Mall as the first-place winner of its Gold Medal Service Awards.
The annual competition seeks to find the "best of the best" shoe stores in America when it comes to customer service. After a screening and nomination process, the magazine sends secret shoppers to visit hundreds of the best stores. Utilizing a point system, the judges select the top 70 finalists, naming them Gold Medal winners. Reyers out-scored the entire field in 2021.
In July, Reyers moved to the mall after more than 130 years in Sharon, Pa. The judges from Footwear Insight were impressed by the fact the owners and their staff were able to make such a bold move yet still maintain such a high level of customer service. The magazine has placed Reyers on its Gold Medal list every year since the award was established in 2015.

VALLEY PARTNERS ADDS BUSINESS COACH: Valley Economic Development Partners, Liberty, has brought on Cassie Wyatt to the newly created role of business coach, in which she will devote her time to providing guidance to small businesses.
She also will provide counseling to clients that are looking to start a business in the Mahoning Valley by
Wyatt will graduate in December from Youngstown State University earning a bachelor's degree in general studies with a concentration in business and communication.
She previously worked in banking as a branch manager with TCF / Huntington Bank.
