Mercy Health doctor recognized for virus response

2 min read

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mercy Health-Youngstown's Dr. James Kravec, the local health system's chief clinical officer, has been recognized for his commitment to patient safety during the viral outbreak.

Kravec was awarded Special Recognition for Heroism During the Pandemic by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality.

"Dr. Kravec both expertly and passionately cares about the people of this Valley and the patients we serve each day," said Dr. John Luellen, market president of Mercy Health-Youngstown. "He continues to tirelessly work to respond in real-time to this ever-changing virus, and we as a community are blessed to have his commitment to the health of us all."

His oversight and leadership in the organization allowed the health system to respond quickly to expand access to care, including flu clinics, drive-thru testing and implementing a virtual visit model for physicians, according to Mercy Health.

He also serves as medical director of Mahoning County Public Health, a role that helped lead to LeapFrog Group's recognition.

Nominations for the one-time award were submitted by hospital staff and leadership across the United States. Winners were selected by an interdisciplinary committee of Leapfrog leaders and advisers.
