Vallourec Star wins environment award

YOUNGSTOWN -- Vallourec Star has won an award from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for its environmentally beneficial activities.

The company is among eight across the state to earn gold recognition in the Encouraging Environmental Excellence program. To achieve gold status, a business or organization must have a comprehensive environmental stewardship program, go beyond regulatory compliance requirements and complete environmental stewardship activities that reduce waste and improve environmental performance.

Vallourec Star won for reducing energy usage for the electric arc furnace; purchasing 86 percent of power from "zero carbon-emitting sources"; recycling 45,000 gallons of wastewater per year; and reducing water consumption by approximately 160 gallons per product ton.

There were four platinum and seven silver winners.

Vallourec Star is a melt shop and rolling mill on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard that produces seamless steel pipe for the gas and oil exploration industry.
