Mural unveiling part of First Fridays event
The unveiling of the Layer of Legacy mural will be part of First Fridays Youngstown.
The mural in the 100 block of West Federal Street was part of America250-Ohio’s efforts to commemorate the country’s semiquincentennial. Artists were selected from nearly 30 applicants to create the mural on the brick facade.
It will be officially unveiled at 3 p.m. Friday at the Disco Garden, and it was funded through contributions by the America250-Ohio Commission, Mayhew Family Foundation, Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, The Youngstown Foundation and ISLE/Purple Cat.
First Fridays Youngstown events from 5 to 8 p.m. will span the North Phelps Street Gateway, Ohio One Building and Apollo Event Center.
The gateway area will host a local vendor marketplace and community organizations. DJ BopMan will spin Motown and funk, and Lit Youngstown will host readings of Walt Whitman’s poetry by Sydney Stalnecker and James Desharnais at 6 and 7 p.m.
The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will lead four downtown tours leaving every half hour starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Ohio One Building will offer an immersive speakeasy-style experience, and the Apollo Event Center will feature live music by Bustin’ Loose and Aunt Millie’s food truck. Both will have building tours.
