Packard band marches into summer
The W.D. Packard Concert Band will march into its outdoor concert season on Sunday.
Marches will dominate the program for the first of six performances by the full band planned at the south lawn bandshell of Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren, through August.
Michael S. Butler, director of bands and an associate professor of music at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, will be guest conductor for the performance.
He oversees the band and orchestra program, conducts the wind ensemble and orchestra, leads the graduate wind conducting program and serves as music director for the YSU Youth Orchestra.
Marches on the program will be Henry Fillmore’s “Men of Ohio” and “Americans We,” John Williams’ Midway March, E.E. Bagley’s “National Emblem” and John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever” to close the show.
Other selections include Aaron Copland’s “An Outdoor Overture,” Frank Ticheli’s “Shenandoah,” Dwayne S. Milburn’s “American Hymnsong Suite,” a medley of songs written by Henry Mancini, Benjamin Horne’s “Deep River,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Slava!” and a tribute to the music of George Gershwin.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
