TCHS Family Day turns 5
Family Day and the Summer Reading Challenge Kick Off Party take place Saturday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.
This is the fifth year for Family Day, started by the Trumbull County Historical Society.
Ryan MacLennan, TCHS director of operations and outreach, said, “When we first started, we only had like six different partner organizations that wanted to participate, and now we’re up to over 25 partner organizations.”
One of the big factors in that growth was partnering with the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, which will kick off its summer reading challenge on Saturday as well. MacLennan said he believes partnering has elevated both programs.
Library activities on Saturday will include sing-along musical entertainment with Clay Colley at 11 a.m., BobKat’s Lil’ Critters, hands-on art activities through SMARTS and gaming and activities in the KidSpace and Teen Central.
The Family Day partner organizations range from arts and service organizations to historical societies and museums to area businesses. Some will have interactive activities for children; others will be giving away items such as stickers and pens, MacLennan said.
Attendees also will be able to get an up-close look at a fire truck and police cruiser.
The event includes free food with hot dogs and chips available while supplies last and an ice cream truck, sponsored by T-Mobile, that will distribute ice cream.
Family Day helps the historical society reach a different audience than some of its other programming.
“Outside of our school outreach we do during the school year, this is a way we could give back to the community as a free event but also reach a younger audience,” MacLennan said. “We often have programs — lectures or speaker series or digitization projects — that generally have a little bit of an older audience, but this certainly engages not only with those parents and grandparents but the kids as well.”
