Gray Areas: Fests for foodies, redheads debut

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• Food and music — with a side of boxing — are planned this weekend with the first Foodie Fest at Penguin City Brewing Company.

More than 20 food vendors will be set up in the parking lot at the brewery, 460 E. Federal St., Youngstown, from noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Penguin City co-owner Aspasia Lyras credited Tra’ Eley, owner of Tra’s Gourmet Sandwiches, with the idea.

“This was his vision,” Lyras said. “He’s been talking about this for a couple years now, with us putting on a food truck festival. And finally we were able to make it work with dates and everything.”

Eley said his partner, Steve Lisko, operates festivals around the country, and they’ve both noticed an increase in food-centric events in other markets.

“Obviously people like to eat,” Eley said. “This gives people something to do in our area that we normally don’t see, besides your traditional Italian festivals. Our goal was to have more than just what you see at the Italian festivals, the meatballs subs and all that stuff. We have a variety, and we limited everyone on what they’re selling, so we don’t have multiple french fries and multiple lemonade stands. Everybody will be selling one thing.”

Participating food vendors include: Tra’s Gourmet Sandwiches, Giardi Express, Armida’s Cucina, Rutana’s Apple Dumplings, Jenny’s Sausage/Steak Hoagies, Molnar’s Cinnamon Rolls, Antone’s, Outtabacker Concessions, Romedio’s Bakery, El Vallarta, Red Rican, Hornyak’s Ice Cream, Boujee Bites, Vlahos Gyros, Wok on the Wild Side, Suzie’s Dogs, Build Your Own Breakfast, Boardwalk Fries and tater tots, corndogs, funnel cakes, lemon shakes and pizza.

Live entertainment during Foodie Fest will be the bands RDNA from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Infidels from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is free except for the live music, when there is a $5 cover charge.

Eley said he and Lisko hope to make it an annual event.

“Our long term goal with it is to eventually do it on the same week as the Youngstown Flea, so we’ll have that going on across the street, plus us,” he said. “And if it continues to be a good thing, we’ll extend the days, but we’re going to start off with the two days and see how this weekend goes.”

Coinciding with Foodie Fest is “Outside the Lion’s Den,” an evening of amateur boxing bouts presented by Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club.

It will be held in the ballroom at Penguin City with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the first of 12 bouts starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the boxing event are $50 for ringside and $25 for general admission.

It is separate from Foodie Fest, but Lyras said the timing works out well.

“Having these on the same day, I love it, because all the people that are going to the boxing match will have an array of food to eat,” she said. “I just think that it’s going to be really fun having both of these things going on together.”

• Also making its debut this weekend is Redhead Fest, starting at noon Saturday at Urban Tap, 439 E. Market St., Warren.

Billed as a celebration of individuality, fun and redhead culture, it will include a Best Red Beard Contest and a “Dress Up as Your Favorite Redhead of All Time” Contest with individual, couple and group prize categories.

From noon to 4 p.m. the festival grounds will have vendors, activities and giveaways with DJ Justberg spinning vinyl from noon to 2 p.m. and Matt Boser performing from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Detroit-based Beastie Boys tribute act Imposters in Effect will perform at 5 p.m. and DJ Marcus Aurelius from Taiwan will close out the festivities.

Admission is free, and the first 50 natural redheads will receive a free grab bag.
