A musical by Stephen Sondheim and a musical about a redheaded orphan will bookend Kent State University at Trumbull Theatre's 2026-27 season.
Sondheim's "Into the Woods," a dark reimagining of familiar fairy tales, will open the season on Nov. 12 with Harmon Andrews directing.
The second production will be the dark comedy "The Secretaries," written by Lisa Kron, Babs Davy, Dominique Dibbell, Peg Healey and Maureen Angelos.
Kron won two Tony Awards for writing the book and lyrics for the musical "Fun Home."
Jessica Brumfield will direct the play about the women who work at a lumber mill where strange things occur, and it will open March 12, 2027.
Eric Kildow will direct "The Madness of George III," which opens April 30, 2027. Alan Bennett's play focuses on the erratic behavior of Great Britain's King George III (1738-1820). The play was adapted into a 1994 film starring Nigel Hawthorne and Helen Mirren.
The season will close with the Kent-Trumbull Summer Stock musical "Annie," directed by Sydney Olejnik-Thompson. The Charles Strouse/Martin Charnin/Thomas Meehan production ran for nearly six years on Broadway after its 1977 debut (winning seven Tonys, including best musical), and it remained popular with community theaters and summer stock programs, thanks to its many roles for children.
