JCC will host the screening of a civil rights documentary on Wednesday
The documentary "Ain't No Back to a Merry-Go-Round" will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane.
In 1960, five black students rode a segregated carousel and ignited one of the earliest organized interracial civil rights protests in U.S. history. The documentary is the untold story of the Jews they marched with, the Nazis they provoked, the Congressmen they inspired and the Civil Rights leaders they became.
Erin Wiggins Gilliam, associate provost of academic affairs for student success and strategic initiatives and dean of graduate studies at Edward Waters University, will speak following the film. Admission is free, but registration is required by Tuesday at jccyoungstown.org/filmfest.
Youngstown Playhouse schedules auditions for comedy 'The Lyons'
Auditions are scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 25 and 26 at Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane, for the dramatic comedy "The Lyons."
Cast requirements are six actors, ages 20s to 70s. The role of Rita Lyons is already cast. Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute contemporary, comedic / seriocomic monologue and be prepared to read from the script. The director is Connor Bezeredi.

Local film 'Sunny Sixteen' seeks actors with open casting call
An open casting call for actors of all ages is set 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 for the film "Sunny Sixteen" at Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Road, Canfield.
"Sunny Sixteen" is a faith-based coming-of-age film directed by Hubbard filmmaker William Victor Schotten, whose film "The Abiding Nail" won several awards at independent film festivals.

Canton Ballet offers scholarships for Mahoning County students
Mahoning County dance students are eligible for scholarships to study with Canton Ballet.
A major grant from the Robert H. Reikert Foundation, the largest in Canton Ballet's 60-year history, expands scholarship support for students in Mahoning, Stark, Summit, Portage and Medina counties.
