Packard band’s 71st year marks America’s 250th

The W.D. Packard Concert Band and its affiliated ensembles will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary throughout 2026.

The programming starts with Sunday’s concert, “America’s Jubilee,” which will feature a musical lineup of all-American composers.

Thomas Groth, executive director of the band, credited Conductor Galen S. Karricker with putting together the program.

“Galen picked the concert and the tunes that would fit into that, America’s Jubilee,” Groth said.

“You could probably play 10 concerts (with that theme).”

The program will include Jack Stamp’s “Fanfare for a New Era,” Philip Sparks’ “Jubilee Overture,” Aaron Copland’s “The Promise of Live” from “The Tender Land,” Edwin Franko Goldman’s and George Kenny’s “Jubilee” marches, Frank Ticheli’s “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs,” medleys of Leroy Anderson and George M. Cohan songs arranged by James Barnes, Morton Gould’s “Yankee Doodle” and John Philip Sousa’s “America First” march.

“Each concert is going to reflect something regarding the 250th anniversary of our country,” Groth said.

The theme for February’s concert will be “Sunday in Spain” and feature programming influenced by Christopher Columbus’s trip to what became known as America in 1492. The annual jazz festival in April featuring the Big Band Sound of Packard, directed by Daniel Carioti, and area high school ensembles will focus on jazz as a true American art form.

The May concert will celebrate Armed Forces Day as well as Memorial Day.

Details for some of the other concerts still are in the works, Groth said, and he didn’t want to release more information until everything is confirmed.

“We’ve got some surprises planned for the July 4 concert on the actual date,” he said.
