Locally funded workshop leads to Kent exhibition

An exhibition made possible through the Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series is on display at Kent State University’s Armstrong Gallery.

“Alien Staff” features student work created in collaboration with internationally renowned artist Krzysztof Wodiczko. After speaking at Kent State last spring, Wodiczko returned to lead an immersive workshop with architecture and art students.

The workshop was funded through the visiting artist series named for Schroth, a Niles architect who died in 1997, and funded by Cecile and the late Max Draime of Howland.

The “Alien Staff” exhibition highlights mediating devices, amplifying the voices of those grappling with cultural, social and political challenges. These experimental instruments — extensions of his long-standing practice — are designed as tools for individuals who experience alienation, displacement, distress or identity crises in the contemporary world.

Wodiczko is recognized for his socially engaged and politically charged works that give voice to marginalized and silenced individuals. Best known for his large-scale public projections on buildings and monuments, Wodiczko brings his practice to a more personal scale in this project.

The work will be on display through Jan. 2, 2026, in the Armstrong Gallery at the John Elliot Center for Architecture and Environmental Design, 132 S. Lincoln St., Kent. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and admission is free.

Starting at $3.23/week.
