Porges’ paintings and pastels on display

The work of artist Susan Porges will be on display through January at the Ashtabula Arts Center gallery.

“Inspired by Nature: Works in Pastels & Oils” features creations by the Solon-based artist. She is a master pastelist with the International Association of Pastel Societies and a juried member of the Pastel Society of America and the Oil Painters of America. Her work has been published in the book “Strokes of Genius” as well as The Richeson75, International Art Books, Pastel Magazine and Artists Magazine: The Best of Drawing.

According to the artist, “My focus is mainly the landscapes of NE Ohio, but I love to bring my supplies along when traveling. After a long career as an illustrator and calligrapher, I’ve chosen to work in a painterly style and love to explore what the mediums can do with mark-making, underpaintings and experimental techniques. After my years doing very realistic work, my aim is to transcend conventional realism and be as expressive as I can.”

A reception is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For more, go to ashtabulaartscenter.org or call 440-964-3396.
