Maniscalco brings family stories, not politics, to comedy stage
One of the top selling comedians today brings his act to the Covelli Centre next week.
Sebastian Maniscalco sold out five nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden in September and has set attendance records in other cities with his stories about his Italian-American family.
Maniscalco’s current tour will be filmed for an upcoming special that will debut on Hulu as part of its new “Hularious” series of monthly standup performances.
In a statement last month announcing the deal, Maniscalco said, “How many times do you catch yourself thinking, ‘It Ain’t Right’? This special is my way of uniting us to laugh at the ridiculousness of the world around us, and I’m thrilled to share it with my fans. So, get your sweats on, pop yourself some popcorn, and get ready to laugh.”
That’s not his only upcoming television appearance. The MAX series “Bookie,” created by Chuck Lorre (“Big Bang Theory,” “Two-and-a-Half Men”) and starring Maniscalco as an illegal bully dealing with deadbeat gamblers and the threat of legalized gambling in California, will return for a second season in December.
He’s also parlayed his standup career into other acting jobs, from parts in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and the Oscar-winning “The Green Book” to co-writing and starring opposite Robert De Niro in the comedy “About My Father.”
One topic he won’t be covering in Youngstown is this week’s election. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Maniscalco said, “You see politics on your iPhone. You see it when you go home and pop on the TV. You see it on the computer. Politics is constantly in your face … Regardless of who you like — if you like Trump or Harris — I feel like people want to just leave that at the door and enjoy a night of comedy, and then you could pick it back up the next day. I’ve always felt that whatever my father or my family is doing is a lot funnier than whatever the political candidate at the time is doing.”
Maniscalco learned years ago that audiences didn’t have to share his ethnic background to connect with those bits inspired by his family.
He told the New York Post in September, “I once did a bit about going to an Italian wedding with cash and, when I was in the editing room, I thought, ‘I don’t know if I want to keep this in the special because I’m not sure if the broader audience (will relate). “But I discovered from comments online that it resonated with people who came from Greek families or other cultures. From there, I realized I can talk about my personal life, my Italian father from Sicily and my culture for the masses.”
Maniscalco performs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 with a triangular stage set up in the middle of the Covelli Centre floor. Only Platinum seats and a few scattered singles remain.
