YSU Youth Orchestra announces auditions

By Staff report 1 min read

Auditions for the upcoming Youngstown State University Youth Orchestra's 2024-25 season will take place in September.

The youth orchestra is open to area students ages 13 to 18 by audition only, and it performs two concerts annually. Music Director Michael S. Butler and Assistant Director Richard Smrek are retained by YSU to provide artistic leadership.

The youth orchestra program consists of two groups -- the Symphony Orchestra, which features woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments; and the Symphonette, a string-only group primarily designed for middle school-aged students.

While the Symphony Orchestra is intended mainly for high school-aged students, occasionally younger students with the passion and talent to participate are admitted.

To audition for the 2024-25 season, visit ysu.edu/ysuyo. Video submissions must be submitted by Sept. 11. In-person auditions will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 14 at YSU's Bliss Hall.

The Symphony Orchestra meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays at Bliss Hall. The Symphonette meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Boardman High School.
