Valley’s steel roots inspires YSO

By Staff report 1 min read

YOUNGSTOWN -- Guest conductor Erik Ochsner returns to lead the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra on Sunday.

The program, "Unknown & Gorgeous: River and Iron," is inspired by the regional proximity to the Mahoning River and the Valley's steel industry history as well as the conductor's Finnish-American roots, Ochsner said in a December interview.

The concert will open with Aaron Copland's "John Henry: A Railroad Ballad for Orchestra"; Eugene Kapp's Kalevipoeg's "Ballet Suite"; Alexander Mosolov's "The Iron Foundry"; Uuno Klami's "Kalevala Suite"; Peter Boyer's "Rolling River: Sketches on "Shenandoah"; Tobias Picker's "Old and Lost Rivers" and Ottorino Respighi's "Pines of Rome."

Ochsner attended the Pierre Monteux school and graduated from Dartmouth College. He is the founder and music director of the SONOS Chamber Orchestra and has conducted orchestras performing live film scores for more than 50 performances worldwide.

He will be back with YSO on April 26 when the orchestra plays a pops concert with Youngstown band The Vindys.

The concert starts at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Tickets range from $12 to $43 and are available online at experienceyourarts.org and by calling 330-259-9651.
