The musical "Gypsy" opens Friday at ACTS Center for the Performing Arts for a two-weekend run.
The Jule Styne /Stephen Sondheim/Arthur Laurents musical opened on Broadway in 1959 and ran for nearly two years. While it was nominated for eight Tony Awards, it was shut out at the 1960 ceremony. However, the musical has achieved a legacy far beyond some of the shows that beat it. ("Fiorello!," a musical about New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, won best new musical that year).
"Gypsy," the story of striptease performer Gypsy Rose Lee and her ultimate stage mother, has enjoyed four Broadway revivals, and Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and Patti LuPone all have won Tonys for portraying Mama Rose. The musical features such Broadway standards as "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You" and "Rose's Turn."
Ron Sinesio directs the ACTS production with musical direction by Joe Spurio and choreography by Emelia Sherin.
The cast features Molly Leonard, Kali-Davies Anderson, Erin Morrell, Ron Wolford, Lexi Jackson, Sylvan Paglia, Sam Early, Tom Morelli, Cole Plotner, Mike Allenbaugh, Gerri Jenkins, Suzanne Cebula, Kimberly Paglia, Andrew Ealy, Harmony Mergle, Harper Mergl, Ben Bissell, Eden Sheesley, John Woge, Gabriel Garcia, Mark Nelson, Amy Perman Javens, Miranda Woge, Meghan Kowalski, Casey Loren, Maryn Pernesky, Ronald Grantz, Noah Gatto and Missa Eaton.
The musicians will be backed by a live orchestra featuring Jay Kozirynsky, Stephanie Nicol, Devin Zerjav, Anna O'Malley, Stephanie Pavlovich, Nick Samson, Dalton Stoops, Jacob Moon, Jim Scanga, Stephen Ley and Jeanetta Plotner.
