Mural artist goes small for gallery show

Folks in downtown Warren will be able to see Royce Umberger's work this Friday on a somewhat smaller scale.
Umberger, who completed the new murals in David Grohl Alley in September, will display his recent work in an exhibition at Boko Photo, the studio owned by photographer and artist Sarah Bokone.
"I went to her solo show, where she displayed her work," Umberger said. "It was a really cool show, a really cool space. I just felt that was a good space to show my work. I knew her, so I asked if I could use her space."
Umberger's exhibition, "Drawn Out," will focus on ink drawings he's created in the last year, most measuring about 9 inches by 12 inches.
"It's mostly stuff I've been working on the last couple of months," he said. "Mostly abstract. It falls in line with what I did with the mural. There are some figurative elements, but all are within an abstract composition."
The artist is an Akron native who came to the Mahoning Valley in 2006 and moved from Mineral Ridge to Boardman earlier this year. His mural proposal for David Grohl Alley was selected from more than 20 submissions.
Earlier this week, Umberger still was deciding how many pieces to show, but he expects there will be between 40 and 50 drawings shown. Some already have been purchased, but the rest of the works will be for sale.
"Drawn Out" runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Boko Photo, 174 N. Park Ave. Suite 3. The space is not handicap accessible. Admission is free, and an after party is scheduled at Modern Methods Brewing Company.
